Transforming Healthcare Access Across Punjab
Punjab’s government has rolled out six flagship health projects that are reshaping the province’s healthcare landscape. Launched under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, these initiatives have already benefited more than 21 million patients, marking a significant achievement in public health.
One of the standout programs is Clinics on Wheels, which have treated over 18.2 million patients. These mobile clinics have conducted 7 million ultrasounds and vaccinated 1.2 million children, ensuring healthcare reaches even the most remote communities.
Field hospitals have also played a vital role, serving 2.8 million patients. They have carried out 448,468 lab tests and performed 170,772 X-rays and ultrasounds, providing essential diagnostic services to underserved populations.
The free home delivery of medicines initiative has brought relief to thousands of patients battling chronic illnesses. More than 30,000 patients suffering from diabetes, hepatitis, and tuberculosis are receiving medicines directly at their doorstep, including insulin supplies for diabetes patients.
Punjab has also prioritized infrastructure upgrades. In Phase I, 1,026 Basic Health Units (BHUs) and 191 Rural Health Centres (RHCs) were revamped. Phase II saw 433 BHUs and 81 RHCs upgraded, while Phase III is currently modernizing 895 centres. These upgrades are turning outdated facilities into modern healthcare hubs.
The stroke management programme is another critical initiative, with plans to establish specialized centres in district hospitals. Meanwhile, cardiac catheterisation labs are operational in four districts—Jhelum, Jhang, Mianwali, and Vehari—where over 1,600 procedures including angiographies and angioplasties have been successfully performed.
Community health inspectors have registered 63 million individuals and collected data from 8 million households, strengthening disease surveillance and healthcare planning. Digital monitoring by 251 surveillance assistants ensures hospitals and health centres are tracked for performance and efficiency.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed that the revamping of health centres be completed within the year and emphasized expanding nursing education to meet growing healthcare demands.
These flagship projects reflect Punjab’s commitment to accessible, modern, and patient-focused healthcare, setting a strong foundation for long-term health reforms across the province.
