Preventing Congo Virus Spread During Eidul Adha in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Health authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have issued a strong advisory ahead of Eidul Adha 2026 to curb the spread of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), commonly known as the Congo virus. With livestock movement increasing during the festive season, hospitals and communities are being urged to adopt strict safety measures.
The advisory, released on April 19, covers all districts of the province. Hospitals and District Health Officers (DHOs) have been instructed to remain vigilant, as the risk of transmission rises when animals are handled and slaughtered during Eid.
Medical staff have been directed to use personal protective equipment (PPE) when treating suspected patients. Infection control protocols must be followed rigorously, including safe disposal of medical waste. Suspected samples are to be transported using triple packaging while maintaining the cold chain, with diagnostic testing carried out through PCR and ELISA methods.
Livestock handlers and the general public have been advised to take preventive steps. Tick control in animals is essential, and communities are urged to avoid direct contact with animal blood during slaughter. Using gloves, masks, and disinfectants can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
Hospitals have been told to stay in close contact with the National Institute of Health (NIH) for guidance and support. Surveillance teams are on alert to ensure early detection and immediate reporting of suspected cases.
The Congo virus is highly infectious and can be fatal, spreading through tick bites or contact with infected animal blood. With millions of animals sacrificed during Eidul Adha, the advisory aims to protect healthcare workers and the public by enforcing preventive measures.
By following these guidelines, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa hopes to minimize the risk of outbreaks and safeguard communities during the upcoming festival.
