Medicine Supply Secured for the Next Six Months
Pakistan’s Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has reassured citizens that the country currently holds sufficient medicine stocks to meet demand for the next five to six months. This announcement comes as a relief amid global uncertainties, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted supply chains worldwide.
The minister emphasized that the health ministry and the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) are working closely with the pharmaceutical industry to ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines. Strict oversight and proactive measures have been put in place to safeguard supplies, ensuring that hospitals, pharmacies, and clinics across the country remain well-stocked.
During a high-level meeting attended by representatives from the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries, officials also reviewed the availability of helium gas used in MRI machines, recognizing its critical role in diagnostic services nationwide. This reflects the government’s broader commitment to maintaining healthcare infrastructure and ensuring patients receive timely medical care.
Adding to the reassurance, the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) confirmed that the industry is absorbing rising energy and logistics costs rather than passing them on to consumers. PPMA Chairman Usman Shaukat highlighted that despite economic pressures, the industry remains committed to providing quality medicines at affordable prices. He noted that pharmaceutical companies are maintaining ample stocks of raw materials and packaging supplies to prevent any disruption in production.
The health ministry has also dismissed rumors of price hikes in essential medicines, clarifying that rates have not undergone any upward revision. With 85% of medicines manufactured locally, Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector is well-positioned to withstand international supply chain disruptions.
This coordinated effort between the government, Drap, and the pharmaceutical industry underscores Pakistan’s resilience in safeguarding public health. Citizens can be confident that essential medicines will remain available and affordable, even in the face of global challenges.
