PM Shehbaz Sharif Reaffirms Commitment to Eradicating Polio in Pakistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to eliminating polio from Pakistan, declaring it a national priority. In a high-level meeting with a delegation from Rotary International Foundation, led by President Francesco Arezzo, the Prime Minister emphasized that despite challenges, the goal of a polio-free Pakistan is achievable through dedication and coordinated efforts.
Government and Global Partners Join Forces
During the meeting, PM Shehbaz thanked Rotary International and other global organizations for their continued support in Pakistan’s polio eradication efforts. He acknowledged the $500 million spent by Rotary on polio campaigns in Pakistan last year and welcomed their pledge to allocate substantial resources again this year.
Frontline Workers at the Heart of the Campaign
The Prime Minister praised the bravery and commitment of polio workers, especially those operating in high-risk and remote areas. He emphasized that their role is vital in reaching every child and ensuring full immunization coverage. The selection and performance of the polio eradication team were also commended by the visiting delegation.
A Unified National Effort
Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, Special Representative for Polio Eradication Ayesha Raza Farooq, and other senior officials attended the meeting, underscoring the government’s collective resolve. PM Shehbaz stressed that all institutions—health departments, provincial governments, and law enforcement—must work in unison to protect Pakistan’s children from this preventable disease.
Looking Ahead: Eradication by 2025
With 21 polio cases reported so far in 2025, the urgency of the mission is clear. The government is mobilizing resources, enhancing surveillance, and launching targeted vaccination drives to eliminate both active cases and environmental traces of the virus. PM Shehbaz’s leadership is seen as pivotal in steering the country toward a polio-free future.
