Pakistan Fills 98% Medical Seats, Benefiting 1,000 Students

Medical Education Strengthened Through Coordinated Efforts

Pakistan’s medical education system has achieved a major milestone, with nearly 98% of medical seats filled nationwide. This success comes after detailed deliberations and joint action by the Ministry of National Health Services, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), and the National Assembly Standing Committee on Health.

The committee, chaired by Dr. Mahesh Kumar Malani, was informed that around 1,000 students secured admissions out of approximately 1,100 previously vacant seats. Extended deadlines had failed to resolve the issue earlier, but coordinated efforts ensured that almost all seats were utilized effectively.

A key focus of the meeting was the future of MDCAT examinations. Officials confirmed that exams will now be conducted immediately after the conclusion of FSC and Cambridge examinations across the country. This change aims to avoid delays and provide students with a clear timeline. The committee directed the Ministry and PMDC to finalize and announce schedules well in advance, giving students ample time to prepare.

Members also raised concerns about student welfare in medical colleges, particularly in Punjab and Mirpur Khas, where reports of deaths and suicides have surfaced. The Ministry was instructed to submit a detailed report on these incidents and implement corrective measures to prevent future tragedies.

Another pressing issue discussed was the rise in HIV cases, with 331 reported in Taunsa Tehsil alone. The committee termed the situation alarming and requested a comprehensive briefing in the next meeting, including details on global funding allocations and their utilization.

The committee further emphasized the need for stronger inspection mechanisms and collaboration with provincial departments before finalizing key policies. Additionally, discussions were held on the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council Ordinance, 2025, with recommendations for necessary amendments before passage.

This achievement of filling nearly all medical seats reflects Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare education system. By ensuring that aspiring doctors secure admissions and by addressing systemic challenges, the government is laying the foundation for a more robust and responsive medical sector.
