President Asif Ali Zardari’s official visit to China has opened new avenues for collaboration, particularly with Hunan province. His meetings with Shen Xiaoming, Party Secretary of Hunan, and Governor Mao Weiming underscored the importance of strengthening ties in agriculture, trade, health, and education.

Zardari emphasized that Pakistan-China relations remain a cornerstone of Islamabad’s foreign policy. He highlighted Hunan’s expertise in agricultural technology, seed innovation, and modern farming practices, noting their potential to boost Pakistan’s productivity. This focus on agriculture aligns with Pakistan’s long-term goals of food security and sustainable development.

Trade and industrial growth were also central to the discussions. The president pointed to opportunities in agricultural machinery, mineral processing, and information technology. His visit to Sany Heavy Industry Co. Ltd reinforced Pakistan’s interest in smart manufacturing, clean energy, and digital infrastructure. These sectors are seen as vital for modernizing Pakistan’s economy and creating new jobs.

Education and cultural exchange formed another key pillar of the visit. Shen Xiaoming revealed that Hunan universities have signed 12 cooperation agreements with Pakistani institutions, with nearly 1,000 Pakistani students currently studying in the province. This academic partnership strengthens people-to-people ties and builds a foundation for future innovation.

Governor Mao Weiming described Pakistan and China as “good friends, good neighbours, good partners, and good brothers.” He pledged Hunan’s support for the development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor 2.0, a project central to regional connectivity and economic progress.

President Zardari also visited Hunan Tea Group, where he learned about tea processing and global market strategies. This visit highlighted Pakistan’s interest in diversifying trade and exploring niche industries.
