WHO Raises Alarm Over Deadly Ebola Outbreak in Congo

Ebola Outbreak Sparks Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization has sounded the alarm over the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, describing its scale and speed as deeply concerning. The Bundibugyo strain of the virus has already claimed 131 lives and left over 513 suspected cases, prompting WHO to declare an international health emergency.

Unlike the Zaire strain, which has vaccines available, the Bundibugyo strain currently has no approved vaccine or therapeutic treatment. This makes containment efforts more challenging, especially in conflict-hit regions where access to healthcare and laboratory testing is limited.

The epicenter of the outbreak lies in Ituri province, a gold-mining hub plagued by militia violence. The virus has already spread into neighboring provinces and across borders into Uganda, where confirmed cases have been reported in Kampala.

Congolese Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba explained that many deaths were initially misattributed to mystical causes, delaying hospital treatment and worsening the crisis. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that the decision to declare a health emergency was not taken lightly, but was necessary given the rapid escalation.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has also declared the outbreak a continental public health emergency. International organizations, including the Red Cross, have urged warring factions in Congo to allow humanitarian access to affected regions.

Globally, countries are tightening precautions. The United States has begun screening air passengers from outbreak-hit areas and suspended visa services, while Germany has prepared to treat an infected American doctor exposed while working in Congo.

Ebola, first identified in 1976, is a deadly viral disease spread through direct contact with bodily fluids. It can cause severe bleeding, organ failure, and has historically carried mortality rates of 30–50% for the Bundibugyo strain.

This outbreak marks the 17th Ebola crisis in Congo, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to recurring epidemics. With limited treatment options and rising cross-border cases, global health authorities are racing to contain the virus before it spirals further.
