Driving Growth Through Pharma Certification and Vaccine Policy
Pakistan’s health sector has reached a turning point with two major breakthroughs announced by Federal Minister for National Health, Syed Mustafa Kamal. These initiatives are expected to reshape the pharmaceutical industry and strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
The first milestone is the World Health Organization (WHO) pre-qualification of the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) in Karachi, which operates under the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). This certification is a game changer for local pharmaceutical manufacturers, as it reduces regulatory hurdles and simplifies export documentation. With this recognition, Pakistani medicines will gain easier access to international markets, significantly boosting exports.
Minister Kamal emphasized that Pakistan is currently at WHO Maturity Level 2 but is on track to achieve Level 3 within six to eight months. This advancement could expand Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports from the current 51 countries to nearly 150, opening doors to new markets and enhancing the country’s global presence.
The second breakthrough is the approval of the National Vaccine Policy by the federal cabinet. For the first time in Pakistan’s history, this policy lays the foundation for local vaccine production. It is expected to attract foreign investment, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and fill a long-standing gap in the health sector where no formal vaccine framework previously existed.
Minister Kamal described these developments as potential game changers. By combining international certification with a robust vaccine policy, Pakistan is positioning itself as a competitive player in global healthcare. The initiatives not only promise economic growth through exports but also ensure better preparedness against future health challenges.
Together, these steps highlight Pakistan’s commitment to advancing healthcare innovation, supporting local industries, and building resilience in the face of global health demands.
