Civil Hospital Karachi Set for Rs100 Billion Transformation

Transforming Karachi’s Healthcare Landscape

The Sindh government has given in-principle approval to a landmark Rs100 billion project to overhaul Civil Hospital Karachi, one of the province’s busiest and oldest public healthcare institutions. The initiative is designed to elevate the hospital into a world-class medical facility capable of meeting the city’s growing healthcare demands.

At the heart of the plan is a major infrastructure expansion, including the addition of around 500 new beds to accommodate rising patient numbers. Modern medical and surgical towers will replace outdated structures, with one tower dedicated to humanitarian icon Abdul Sattar Edhi, symbolizing the blend of modern healthcare and public service legacy.

The revamp will introduce advanced facilities such as a new outpatient department (OPD), an upgraded burns unit, specialized wards, a modern mortuary, and an improved waste management system. Residential hostels for doctors and nurses, along with new administrative buildings, are also part of the expansion, ensuring better support for medical staff.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of preserving the hospital’s historical identity. Heritage structures within the premises will be restored to maintain their cultural and architectural significance, ensuring that modernization does not erase the hospital’s legacy.

Accessibility improvements are also central to the plan. Surrounding roads will be widened to ease traffic congestion and ensure smoother ambulance and patient movement, addressing long-standing challenges in the area.

To guarantee transparency and efficiency, a dedicated governing body comprising public and private sector experts will oversee the project’s execution. This governance model is expected to ensure accountability and timely delivery of the ambitious redevelopment.

The Rs100 billion revamp is being hailed as a transformative step for Karachi’s healthcare system. By modernizing Civil Hospital Karachi, the Sindh government aims to provide millions of residents with improved medical services, positioning the hospital as a flagship institution for the future of healthcare in Pakistan.
