Peshawar Confirms Second Mpox Case This Month

Health authorities in Peshawar have reported a second case of the mpox virus this month. The latest case involves a five-month-old girl who tested positive upon arrival at Peshawar airport from Qatar. Attaullah Khan, spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister’s adviser on health, stated that the health department is now testing the infant’s parents for the virus.

Earlier this month, a 35-year-old man was also diagnosed with mpox during routine screening at the same airport. He was subsequently isolated at the Police Services Hospital.

In 2024, Pakistan reported at least eight mpox cases and has since implemented stringent screening protocols at all airports and border entry points. The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency on August 14, 2024, due to a new mutated strain of mpox, clade I, which originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo. To date, Pakistan has not reported any cases of this new mutation.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, presents with flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. Children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and advise the public to remain vigilant.
