Protecting Newborns Through Timely Vaccination in Pakistan
Every day in Pakistan, more than a thousand children under five lose their lives to diseases that could have been prevented with vaccines. Despite the proven power of immunization, Pakistan remains among the top ten countries with the highest number of zero-dose children—those who have not received even their first vaccine.
One major challenge is cultural practices, such as keeping mothers and newborns indoors for the first 40 days after birth. While rooted in tradition, this often delays vital immunizations, leaving infants vulnerable to deadly diseases.
To address this, UNICEF, in partnership with the Government of Pakistan and with support from King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), has established 24/7 Birth Dose Centres across the country. These centres are strategically located next to labor rooms, ensuring that newborns can receive their first vaccine within six hours of birth—day or night.
At these centres, Lady Health Workers play a crucial role. They conduct initial checkups, provide compassionate care, and guide families through the importance of completing the full immunization schedule. Parents receive vaccination cards and clear instructions, empowering them to protect their children against polio, hepatitis B, and tuberculosis.
The impact is already visible. At the Poly Clinic Hospital in Islamabad alone, around 500 newborns benefit from these services each month. Families, like Muhammad Faisal’s from Balakot, travel long distances to ensure their babies receive timely protection. This dedication highlights the growing awareness of the importance of early healthcare.
While progress is being made, thousands of children across Pakistan still miss out on life-saving vaccines. Expanding access to these services nationwide is essential. The partnership between UNICEF, KSrelief, and the Ministry of Health is paving the way toward a future where no child is left behind.
By ensuring timely vaccinations and compassionate newborn care, Pakistan is taking bold steps toward reducing infant mortality and giving every child the chance to grow up healthy and thrive.
