Mustafa Kamal Accelerates Healthcare Reforms Across Pakistan

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal is driving a transformative agenda aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s healthcare system. In a high-level meeting held on September 8, 2025, Kamal laid out a strategic roadmap to fast-track critical health projects and overhaul regulatory frameworks.

Cancer Hospital and Emergency Ward Projects Prioritized

Among the top priorities is the rapid development of a new Cancer Hospital and an advanced Emergency Ward. These facilities are expected to significantly improve access to specialized treatment and emergency care, especially in underserved regions.

Digitization of PMDC and Nursing Council

The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) is undergoing full digitization to promote merit-based licensing and enhance transparency. Similar reforms are being implemented in the Pakistan Nursing Council, streamlining operations and improving service delivery for healthcare professionals.

DRAP Reform: Faster Licensing and Regulatory Efficiency

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has introduced a digitized licensing system for medical devices, now issuing licenses within a fixed 20-day window. This reform is designed to eliminate bureaucratic delays and ensure timely access to essential medical technologies.

Combating Counterfeit Medicines with 2D Barcodes

Minister Kamal emphasized the urgent need to eliminate counterfeit drugs, which pose serious risks to public health. To address this, the government is accelerating the rollout of a 2D barcode system for medicine verification. Meetings with pharmaceutical stakeholders are already underway to ensure smooth implementation.

Unified Strategy for Long-Term Healthcare Reform

The Ministry of Health has developed an integrated strategy to guide these reforms, focusing on transparency, efficiency, and patient-centered care. Kamal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to decisive action and long-term improvements in medical governance.
