Loved for its sweet flavor and chewy tapioca pearls, it is especially popular among younger generations. However, new research warns that excessive consumption may carry significant health risks.
Nutritionists point out that tapioca pearls, made from cassava starch, are high in calories but low in nutritional value. Regular consumption can contribute to unhealthy dietary habits without providing essential nutrients.
Another concern is contamination. Cassava plants can absorb heavy metals such as lead and cadmium from the soil. Some bubble tea samples have shown elevated levels of lead, raising alarms about long-term exposure and its impact on overall health.
Digestive issues are also linked to boba tea. Eating large amounts of tapioca pearls may cause indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, and in rare cases, intestinal blockage. Drinks containing guar gum as a thickening agent can worsen constipation. For children, the large pearls pose a choking hazard, with incidents reported in Singapore.
The risks extend beyond digestion. Ingredients like oxalate and phosphate found in bubble tea may increase the likelihood of kidney stones. A striking case in Taiwan in 2023 involved a young woman whose excessive bubble tea consumption led doctors to remove more than 300 kidney stones.
Mental health concerns have also surfaced. Studies in China suggest that frequent bubble tea consumption is associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and fatigue, adding another layer of caution for regular drinkers.
Despite these findings, experts emphasize that bubble tea does not need to be eliminated entirely. Instead, moderation is key. Choosing smaller portions, reducing sugar content, and avoiding added thickeners can help minimize risks while still enjoying the drink.
