Pakistan Becomes Regional Medical Device Hub with Revolutionary 20-Day Licensing System

A Game-Changer for Healthcare Regulation

Pakistan is rapidly transforming into a regional powerhouse in medical device manufacturing, thanks to a groundbreaking digital licensing system introduced by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). The new platform has slashed approval times from nearly two years to just 20 days, revolutionizing the way medical devices are registered and licensed in the country.

Digitization Driving Efficiency and Investment

Launched on July 21 and inaugurated by the Prime Minister, the Online Registration and Licensing System has already received 940 applications, with 188 approvals issued digitally. This dramatic shift from paper-based bureaucracy to streamlined digital processing is attracting both domestic and foreign investment in Pakistan’s healthcare sector.

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal, during his visit to DRAP headquarters, emphasized three strategic goals:

  • Upholding international quality standards
  • Promoting Pakistan as a regional manufacturing hub
  • Continuously evolving the system to meet global benchmarks

From 24 Months to 20 Days: A Regulatory Milestone

Before this initiative, obtaining a medical device license could take up to 24 months. The new system now delivers approvals in just 20 days, removing major barriers for entrepreneurs and manufacturers. This efficiency gain is not only improving ease of doing business but also accelerating the availability of quality healthcare products across Pakistan.

Enhanced Monitoring and Transparency

The system’s management dashboard has expanded from 10 to 23 parameters within its first month, enabling more robust oversight and transparency. Citizens can now submit applications from home and receive licenses digitally—reflecting the government’s commitment to public service reform and digital governance.

Global Confidence in Pakistan’s Healthcare Standards

Minister Kamal highlighted that the digitization initiative has elevated Pakistan’s medical standards and boosted international confidence in its regulatory framework. By aligning with global norms, Pakistan is positioning itself as a reliable partner in the international healthcare market.

Looking Ahead: A Model for Regional Innovation

This digital transformation marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s healthcare journey. With faster approvals, improved transparency, and a surge in investment, the country is well on its way to becoming a regional hub for medical device innovation and manufacturing.
