AKDN Pledges Support for Flood Recovery and Development in Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan recently hosted senior leaders from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to discuss urgent recovery efforts and long-term development plans following devastating floods in the region.

High-Level Delegation Meets GB Leadership

The delegation included:

  • Nizar Mewawalla, President of the Ismaili Council for Pakistan
  • Aziz Boolani, CEO of Serena Hotels
  • Akhtar Iqbal, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan

CM Gulbar Khan expressed deep appreciation for AKDN’s longstanding contributions to education, healthcare, climate resilience, and community development in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Responding to the Flood Crisis

Following a formal request for assistance from the Chief Minister to His Highness the Aga Khan, AKDN leaders pledged comprehensive support for flood-affected communities.

“We stand with the people of Gilgit-Baltistan in this time of need,” said Nizar Mewawalla, offering condolences and reaffirming AKDN’s commitment to recovery and resilience.

Key Recovery Initiatives

AKDN’s support will include:

  • Reconstruction and eco-friendly upgrades of seven educational institutions
  • Solar panel installation and repair in damaged government healthcare facilities
  • Restoration of potable water systems and protective infrastructure
  • Formation of eight Community Emergency Response Teams in the hardest-hit areas

Strengthening Healthcare Access

To bolster healthcare delivery, AKDN will:

  • Distribute portable medical devices and supplies
  • Deploy mobile healthcare units to flood-impacted zones
  • Launch a program to identify and treat 3,000 undernourished children and women

These efforts aim to restore essential services and build long-term resilience in Gilgit-Baltistan’s vulnerable communities.
