In a decisive move to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services, the Punjab Department of Specialized Health Care and Medical Education has rolled out a revised summer leave policy for teaching faculty at public medical colleges and affiliated hospitals. Effective August 1, 2025, the new policy limits summer vacation to three weeks, which will be deducted from the faculty’s earned leave balance2.
The directive applies to all ranks of medical educators, including Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Senior Registrars, and Demonstrators. The department emphasized that leave is a facility, not an entitlement, and must be managed without compromising clinical operations.
To maintain hospital functionality:
- 67% of clinical faculty must remain on duty
- 50% of basic sciences faculty must be present during the vacation period
Each institution is required to form a Leave Management Committee, led by senior officials such as the Principal, CEO, or Medical Superintendent. These committees must submit finalized leave rosters to the department by April 30 annually.
This policy reflects Punjab’s commitment to balancing academic responsibilities with the relentless demand for patient care in tertiary hospitals. By formalizing vacation schedules and introducing oversight, the province aims to uphold healthcare delivery standards—even during summer breaks.
