Dutch Officials Clear Hantavirus Cruise Ship to Resume Sailing

MV Hondius Cleared After Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak

The MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship that triggered a global health alert after a hantavirus outbreak, has officially been cleared to sail again. Dutch health authorities announced that after extensive cleaning and disinfection, the vessel passed final inspections and poses no further public health risks.

Inspection and Clearance

The Rotterdam public health agency confirmed that infection control experts conducted detailed checks and found the ship had been disinfected according to international guidelines. Their statement emphasized: “There are no longer any obstacles to putting the Hondius back to sea.”

Timeline of the Outbreak

  • The Hondius was sailing from Ushuaia, Argentina to Cape Verde when the outbreak occurred.
  • Three passengers died, and several others were infected.
  • Some passengers disembarked at St Helena before the alert was raised.
  • The ship docked in Tenerife, Spain, where most passengers were flown home.
  • On May 18, the vessel arrived in Rotterdam, where the remaining crew was quarantined.

WHO and Global Impact

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 13 cases linked to the outbreak, including the three fatalities. Hantavirus, spread by rodents, has no vaccine or specific treatment, making outbreaks particularly concerning.

Cruise Schedule Resumes

The ship’s owner, Oceanwide Expeditions, stated that the Hondius will resume its cruise schedule starting June 13. This marks a cautious return to operations after weeks of global scrutiny and emergency health measures.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the vulnerability of cruise ships to infectious disease outbreaks and the importance of strict health protocols. While the Hondius has been cleared, the outbreak serves as a reminder of the risks posed by rodent-borne viruses and the need for rapid international cooperation in managing such crises.
