AI and Robotics Transforming Global Cardiac Care
Chinese surgeon Pan Xiangbin has been awarded Pakistan’s prestigious “Star of Pakistan” honor, recognizing his groundbreaking contributions to pediatric heart surgery and international medical collaboration. The award was presented by President Asif Ali Zardari in Changsha, Hunan province, marking the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China diplomatic ties.
Pan’s work in Pakistan has been transformative. In January 2025, he led a medical team to perform free surgeries for children suffering from congenital heart disease. Families described the doctors as “angels from a distant land,” as patients recovered successfully. Beyond surgeries, his team trained 200 local medical workers, strengthening Pakistan’s capacity to manage complex cardiac cases.
One of Pan’s most notable achievements is the development of a percutaneous, non-fluoroscopic procedure that uses ultrasound instead of X-rays. This minimally invasive technique eliminates radiation exposure and avoids open-heart surgery. Today, it is practiced in over 1,000 hospitals across 60 countries, benefiting more than 200,000 patients.
In April 2026, Pan’s team achieved another milestone by performing a remote mitral valve repair in France using a domestically developed surgical robot guided entirely by ultrasound. This innovation demonstrates how AI and robotics are revolutionizing cardiac care, making advanced procedures accessible even in regions with limited medical infrastructure.
China’s outreach also includes mobile surgical units, which bring life-saving procedures directly to remote villages. Pan emphasizes that sharing technology and training local doctors is essential for sustainable healthcare improvements.
His team’s efforts extend beyond Pakistan. At Fuwai Yunnan Hospital, children from neighboring countries have received treatment under initiatives like the China-Cambodia Love Heart Journey. These programs not only save lives but also foster cultural exchange, with some patients inspired to learn Chinese after their recovery.
Pan Xiangbin’s recognition highlights the growing importance of global medical cooperation. By combining humanitarian outreach with cutting-edge technology, his work is reshaping the future of cardiac care and strengthening ties between nations.
This honor underscores a powerful message: healthcare innovation knows no borders, and collaboration can save lives across continents.
