Polio Cases Decline Sharply in Pakistan

Pakistan’s Fight Against Polio Shows Historic Progress

Pakistan is witnessing a remarkable decline in polio cases, with only one case reported so far in 2026. This milestone reflects the success of sustained vaccination campaigns and improved monitoring systems across the country. The single case emerged from Sujawal, Sindh, highlighting how far the nation has come compared to previous years.

National Coordinator for the Polio Eradication Program, Capt (retd) Anwarul Haq, confirmed that the virus is now confined to environmental samples in just 15 districts. This is a dramatic improvement from earlier years when the virus was detected in 87 districts. Pakistan currently monitors 127 environmental sampling sites to track the presence of the virus, ensuring quick responses to any outbreaks.

The progress is evident across provinces. Punjab is nearly polio-free, with only one site in Lahore showing traces of the virus. In Balochistan, samples from Quetta and Dera Bugti still test positive, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reduced the virus to just two southern districts. Sindh continues to report traces in nine districts, with Karachi showing presence in only four of its 12 monitored sites. These results demonstrate how targeted vaccination drives have successfully contained the virus.

Officials credit the sharp decline to effective nationwide immunisation campaigns. Pakistan recorded 74 cases in 2020, which dropped to 31 cases in 2022, mostly concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The consistent downward trend underscores the importance of community engagement, awareness, and vaccination coverage.

Despite the encouraging progress, health authorities stress that vigilance must continue. For Pakistan to be officially declared polio-free, no cases must be reported for three consecutive years. This requires sustained vaccination efforts and elimination of the virus from remaining environmental hotspots.

With only one reported case this year and the virus limited to fewer districts, Pakistan is closer than ever to achieving polio-free status. The journey is not over, but the country’s determination and progress signal a future where every child can grow up free from the threat of polio.
