Pakistan and Denmark Partner for Sustainable Health Solutions

Pakistan-Denmark Collaboration Targets Obesity and Sustainable Healthcare

Pakistan and Denmark have joined hands to strengthen sustainable health solutions, with a particular focus on tackling the growing obesity crisis. On World Obesity Day 2026, Pakistan’s Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Malik, chaired a joint event organized in collaboration with Novo Nordisk. Danish Ambassador Maja Mortensen emphasized the importance of partnerships that promote knowledge-sharing and innovation to build evidence-based healthcare systems.

Obesity has emerged as a pressing challenge in Pakistan, affecting nearly 38 million people—about one in three individuals. Women and urban populations are disproportionately impacted, while childhood obesity continues to rise. Dr. Malik highlighted that obesity is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, and certain cancers, placing immense pressure on the healthcare system.

The economic impact is equally alarming. In 2019, obesity cost Pakistan an estimated $3.41 billion, and officials warn that the burden will escalate without sustained intervention. Prevention strategies are now central to national health planning, including the Prime Minister’s Program for Prevention and Control of Diabetes Mellitus (2024–2029). This initiative integrates obesity prevention through awareness campaigns, lifestyle improvements, balanced diets, discouraging fast food consumption, and promoting physical activity.

Secretary MONHSRC, Hamed Yaqoob, underscored that obesity is a complex, chronic disease shaped by biological, environmental, and social factors. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to reducing stigma, expanding access to person-centered care, and improving understanding of obesity as a health condition rather than a personal failing.

The collaboration with Denmark reflects Pakistan’s broader vision of building sustainable healthcare solutions. By combining international expertise with national programs, the country aims to reduce the burden of obesity and related diseases, while fostering healthier lifestyles and stronger healthcare resilience.

This partnership marks a significant step toward addressing one of Pakistan’s most urgent health challenges, ensuring that prevention and innovation remain at the heart of future healthcare reforms.
