Cryoablation Brings Hope for Cancer Patients in Rawalpindi
The Punjab government has taken a significant step toward improving cancer care by installing a Cryoablation treatment facility at Holy Family Hospital (HFH) in Rawalpindi. This follows the successful introduction of the technology at Mayo Hospital in Lahore, with plans to expand to Nishtar Hospital in Multan as well.
Cryoablation is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy diseased tissue. By creating a localized ice ball, it effectively targets tumors in the liver, kidney, lung, prostate, and breast. Patients benefit from faster recovery times, less pain, and reduced complications compared to traditional surgery.
Currently, government-run hospitals in Rawalpindi lack oncology departments, forcing cancer patients to seek treatment in private clinics or hospitals in Islamabad. Many patients arrive at public hospitals with tumors but are treated as general cases due to the absence of specialized facilities. This gap has left families struggling with high costs and limited access to proper care.
Healthcare professionals emphasize that the introduction of Cryoablation at HFH will bridge a critical gap in cancer treatment. With nearly 50 cancer patients arriving daily at government hospitals in Rawalpindi, the new facility promises to ease the burden on families and reduce dependence on private healthcare providers.
Experts also highlight the need for establishing oncology departments across all major government hospitals. Without specialized oncologists and diagnostic facilities, patients often face delays and uncertainty in treatment. The addition of Cryoablation technology is seen as a first step toward modernizing cancer care in Punjab’s public sector hospitals.
As the installation progresses, patients and doctors alike express hope that this innovation will transform cancer treatment accessibility in the region. For many families, it represents not just advanced medical technology, but also a chance at affordable, effective care close to home.
