Medical Community Calls for Justice and Protection After Doctor’s Killing
The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Dr Mehwish Hasnain in Kohat, demanding that her murderers be tried in an anti-terrorism court. PIMA leaders stressed that exemplary punishment must be handed down to deter future attacks on healthcare professionals.
At a press conference, PIMA Central President Prof Atif Hafeez Siddiqui highlighted the alarming rise in violence against doctors. He warned that many healthcare professionals are considering leaving Pakistan due to the unsafe environment, which threatens the future of the country’s health system.
Dr Mehwish was shot dead outside KDA Hospital in Kohat while performing her duties. The incident has sparked outrage across the medical community, with doctors staging protests and suspending services to demand justice.
PIMA emphasized that the government must enact nationwide legislation to ensure the protection of doctors and healthcare workers. Hospitals should be declared protection zones, equipped with adequate security measures to safeguard staff and patients.
The association also pointed out that repeated incidents of violence against doctors have created fear and instability in the medical profession. Without urgent reforms, Pakistan risks losing its most skilled professionals to migration, leaving patients vulnerable and the healthcare system weakened.
The demand for justice in Dr Mehwish’s case is not only about punishing the perpetrators—it is about restoring confidence in the medical profession and ensuring that doctors can serve the nation without fear.Focus keyphrase
