Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Sets Up Committee to Review Sehat Sahulat Card Expansion
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a high-level committee to determine the future of the Sehat Sahulat Card—Pakistan’s flagship health insurance initiative. The committee has been tasked with evaluating whether the program should become a permanent federal initiative, expanding universal health coverage across the country.
Committee Composition and Mandate
The committee includes:
- Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal and Mustafa Kamal
- Finance Secretary and Planning Secretary
- Mohammad Arshad, Head of the Health Card Programme
- CEO of State Life Insurance Corporation
The Prime Minister has directed the committee to submit its recommendations within one week, focusing on whether the program’s expenses should be covered under the current budget or through development funds.
Expanding Coverage to Millions
The Sehat Sahulat Card already serves residents of:
- Islamabad
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir
- Gilgit-Baltistan
- Tharparkar District
However, residents of Islamabad have reportedly faced limited access to the facility in recent months, prompting renewed urgency to formalize and expand the program under federal oversight.
Toward Universal Health Access
If adopted as a permanent federal initiative, the Sehat Sahulat Card could offer comprehensive medical coverage to millions of families, reducing out-of-pocket expenses and improving access to quality healthcare nationwide.
