Jinnah Medical Complex to Set Global Benchmark for Healthcare in Pakistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a bold directive to ensure that the under-construction Jinnah Medical Complex in Islamabad meets international standards in both design and operation. The initiative marks a transformative step in Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure, aiming to deliver world-class medical services to citizens across all provinces.
A Vision for World-Class Healthcare
During a high-level review meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that the Jinnah Medical Complex should rival top global medical institutions. The facility will feature:
- Over 1,000 beds
- Nine Centres of Excellence in oncology, cardiology, trauma care, nephrology, and more
- Emergency services and air ambulance access for remote regions
- Advanced research and diagnostic capabilities
The complex is being developed on a 600-kanal site in Sector H-16, with the master plan and technical designs nearing completion.
Transparency and Merit at the Core
To ensure accountability and quality, PM Sharif mandated:
- International tendering for consultants and contractors
- Public disclosure of project partners and financial details
- Independent audits and third-party validation
- Merit-based hiring for all staff and service providers
Support services such as janitorial operations will be outsourced strictly on merit, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ethical governance.
National Unity Through Healthcare
In a symbolic gesture, the Prime Minister directed that various blocks within the complex be named after Pakistan’s provinces, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. This move reflects the inclusive spirit of the project and its role in serving the entire nation.
Strategic Partnerships and Global Interest
The government has engaged international consultants through competitive processes, with technical input from institutions like Aga Khan University. Investor roadshows in China, Turkey, South Korea, and Singapore have attracted interest from over 30 global firms, signaling strong international confidence in the project.
Initial funding has already been transferred into a dedicated trust, and feasibility studies are underway to explore investment opportunities with entities like the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI).
Strengthening Islamabad’s Healthcare Ecosystem
To ease pressure on existing tertiary hospitals, PM Sharif also called for a comprehensive plan to upgrade primary and secondary healthcare facilities in Islamabad. Geo-technical and social impact studies are being conducted to ensure the complex delivers long-term benefits to residents.
