In a startling revelation, the Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has declared 23 bottled water brands unsafe for human consumption. The findings, based on a comprehensive analysis of 203 samples collected from 21 major cities during the second quarter of 2025, highlight serious health risks posed by chemical and microbiological contamination.
The report identifies three major categories of contamination:
- Excessive Sodium Levels: Eleven brands—including New Mehran, Aqua 111, Nice Pure Max, and Qudrat Water—were found to contain sodium levels far beyond permissible limits, posing risks for individuals with hypertension and kidney issues.
- Arsenic Contamination: Four brands, such as Atco Drinking Water and Aqua Nest, were flagged for dangerously high arsenic levels, a known carcinogen linked to long-term health complications.
- Bacterial Presence: Nine brands, including Noble Pure Drinking Water, Wah Water, and Iceland, were contaminated with harmful bacteria, making them unsafe for drinking and increasing the risk of gastrointestinal infections.
One brand, Vey Forever, was found to contain potassium levels exceeding safety standards.
Despite repeated warnings and quarterly monitoring, regulatory enforcement remains weak. Many of these brands continue to operate without consequence, leaving consumers vulnerable. Experts urge the public to consult official water quality reports and demand stricter oversight from the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).
In a country where access to clean drinking water is already limited, the unchecked proliferation of unsafe bottled water represents a growing public health crisis. Consumers are advised to stay informed, read labels carefully, and prioritize trusted sources for drinking water.
