Gates Foundation and Partners Launch $500M Fund to Improve Maternal and Newborn Health in Africa

In a significant move to bolster maternal and newborn health in sub-Saharan Africa, the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with global philanthropic organizations, has established the Beginnings Fund—a $500 million initiative aimed at reducing mortality rates and enhancing healthcare services in the region.

Addressing Critical Health Challenges

The Beginnings Fund aspires to save the lives of 300,000 mothers and newborns by 2030 and to provide quality care to an additional 34 million individuals. Operating in ten African countries—Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe—the fund focuses on implementing low-cost interventions in high-burden hospitals. Key areas of attention include preventing infections, managing postpartum hemorrhaging, and addressing respiratory complications in newborns. ​

Distinct from traditional aid models, the Beginnings Fund emphasizes collaboration with local governments and organizations, ensuring that interventions are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of each country. The launch of the Beginnings Fund comes at a time when international aid for health initiatives is experiencing significant cuts. Beyond the primary $500 million commitment, partners have pledged an extra $100 million in direct investments toward maternal and child health. The fund is supported by notable organizations, including the Mohamed Bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Delta Philanthropies, and the ELMA Foundation. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on healthcare outcomes across the continent.
