In a significant move to enhance healthcare services, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has reinstated free organ transplants under the Sehat Card Plus Programme. This initiative aims to provide essential medical procedures, including liver and kidney transplants, at no cost to residents, thereby improving healthcare accessibility in the province.
The Sehat Card Plus Programme, initially launched to offer universal health coverage, ensured that millions of residents received free medical treatments, significantly alleviating the financial burden associated with healthcare expenses. However, in early 2023, the programme faced funding constraints, leading to a temporary halt in free organ transplants.
Upon resuming power, the KP government prioritized the restoration of these critical services. The reinstated programme now encompasses not only liver and kidney transplants but also extends to bone marrow transplants, thalassemia treatment, and cochlear implants. These treatments, often prohibitively expensive, are now accessible to the populace without financial hardship.
To ensure the sustainability of these services, the KP government has established an endowment fund with an initial allocation of Rs1 billion. This fund is dedicated to supporting free organ and cochlear implants for underprivileged individuals, ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder access to life-saving treatments.
The resumption of free organ transplants under the Sehat Card Plus Programme signifies the KP government’s commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services to its citizens. By alleviating the financial barriers to essential medical procedures, the programme aims to improve health outcomes and enhance the quality of life for residents across the province.
