In a major operation, the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement in Karachi has confiscated a substantial quantity of smuggled Indian-origin medicines, with an estimated market value of Rs10.3 billion. This decisive action has also led to investigations targeting two pharmaceutical companies suspected of involvement.
Massive Haul in Korangi Industrial Area
During a press conference at Customs House on Tuesday, Collector Enforcement Moinuddin Wani detailed the operation. Acting on credible intelligence, enforcement teams raided a warehouse in Karachi’s Korangi Industrial Area, uncovering over 21 million tablets and approximately 7,000 capsules of illicitly imported Tramadol. Tramadol, a potent opioid pain reliever, is strictly regulated in Pakistan due to its potential for misuse in illegal drug markets.
Regulatory Concerns and Public Health Risks
The confiscated medications lacked the necessary approvals from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), raising significant concerns about their safety and authenticity. The absence of proper authorization not only violates import regulations but also poses severe health risks to consumers who might unknowingly use these unverified drugs.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities have initiated thorough investigations into two pharmaceutical companies believed to be connected to this smuggling operation. The objective is to trace the supply chain, identify all parties involved, and enforce legal actions against those responsible for endangering public health and undermining lawful trade practices.
A Landmark Achievement in Anti-Smuggling Efforts
Collector Wani emphasized that this seizure represents a historic milestone in the region’s efforts to combat smuggling. The operation underscores the commitment of customs officials to curb the influx of unauthorized and potentially hazardous pharmaceuticals into the Pakistani market.
