14-Year-Old Zunaira Qayyum Becomes UNICEF Youth Advocate for Climate Action

Pakistan’s young climate champion, Zunaira Qayyum, has been appointed as UNICEF’s Youth Advocate for Climate Action and Girls’ Empowerment. At just 14, she has made remarkable contributions to climate policy discussions and child rights advocacy.

Hailing from Balochistan, Zunaira has represented Pakistani youth at global forums, including COP 29. Her research on climate change-induced flooding and its impact on girls’ education in Hub won recognition in UNICEF’s Policy Research Challenge.

Beyond research, she actively trains adolescents in advocacy, policy engagement, and community mobilization. Her appointment highlights the urgent need for youth-driven climate action as Pakistan faces escalating climate challenges.

UNICEF Pakistan’s representative, Abdullah Fadil, praised her efforts, stating, “Zunaira’s work inspires hope for the future.” With her new role, she aims to amplify young voices in the fight against climate change.
