GOARN’s Remote Support Strengthens Myanmar’s Healthcare Amid Crisis

Myanmar is experiencing one of its most severe humanitarian crises, with over 18.6 million people in urgent need of assistance. The country’s healthcare system is under immense strain due to escalating violence, displacement, and deteriorating infrastructure. These challenges have led to significant public health threats, including outbreaks of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) and cholera in underserved areas.

In response, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN)—a World Health Organization (WHO)-led initiative—has stepped in with remote expert support to help Myanmar combat these health emergencies. By leveraging the knowledge of international health specialists, GOARN is assisting Myanmar’s healthcare authorities in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and data-driven response strategies.

Two remote experts from GOARN partner institutions, including the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET), have been assigned to support Myanmar’s efforts. Their work focuses on analyzing outbreak data, improving response coordination, and advising on public health measures to curb the spread of AWD and cholera.
