Karachi is currently witnessing a concerning rise in respiratory infections among children due to the colder weather. Pneumonia, airway infections, and other respiratory diseases have significantly increased, particularly among children aged five and under. Hospitals across the city are seeing a surge in patients suffering from these illnesses, with children being the most affected.
According to Dawn News, respiratory diseases have become a major health concern in Karachi’s hospitals, especially during the winter months. Dr. Wasim Jamali, the President of the Pakistan Pediatrics Association, stated that the onset of cold weather typically leads to an uptick in respiratory ailments among children. He highlighted that between June and December 2024, over 4,000 cases of respiratory illnesses were reported at Civil Hospital, with 1,000 of those cases being confirmed pneumonia in children.
Dr. Jamali advised parents to take extra precautions to protect their children during this cold spell. He recommended ensuring that children are dressed warmly and are kept away from cold air. Proper ventilation in rooms and regular handwashing were also emphasized as essential preventive measures. Additionally, Dr. Jamali urged parents to avoid sending sick children to school, as this could further spread infections.
Vaccination is another crucial aspect of safeguarding children against viral infections, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which are common in winter. Dr. Jamali stressed that timely vaccinations can help reduce the risk of severe respiratory infections.
The situation in Karachi has been exacerbated by other factors, such as the recent surge in COVID-19, influenza, and RSV infections. On January 18, 2025, reports confirmed a rapid increase in cases of these respiratory illnesses, with many patients presenting symptoms like fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. At Dow Hospital, around 25-30% of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms tested positive for COVID-19, while others were found to be suffering from influenza or RSV.
In December 2024, dust and pollution worsened the situation, with an increased number of people suffering from respiratory ailments. Dr. Javed Ahmed Khan, a senior consultant at Aga Khan University Hospital, stated that the winter season typically amplifies the impact of airborne diseases due to cold, dry air. This year, however, the number of cases has doubled, causing significant strain on healthcare facilities.
Prevention and Care Tips for Parents:
- Keep children warm with appropriate clothing.
- Ensure proper ventilation in living spaces.
- Teach children the importance of frequent handwashing.
- Avoid sending sick children to school.
- Stay up-to-date with vaccinations for respiratory diseases.
With winter in full swing, parents in Karachi are urged to be vigilant and proactive in preventing respiratory infections in their children. Early detection and preventive measures can help reduce the burden of these seasonal illnesses.
