Stray Dog Attacks Surge in Sindh: 300,000 Injured in 2024, Urgent Measures Needed

In 2024, Sindh has been grappling with a rising public health crisis as stray dog attacks injured more than 300,000 individuals across the province. Karachi, the most affected city, recorded over 50,000 cases, with 18 fatalities linked to severe dog bites. Despite an earlier pilot project in 2018 that focused on dog vaccination and sterilization, authorities have failed to implement any follow-up measures, exacerbating the situation.

Experts like Aftab Gauhar and Dr. Romana Farhat have stressed the urgent need for effective vaccination programs and dog control initiatives to curb the rising number of injuries. Local hospitals, especially in rural areas, are facing shortages of anti-rabies vaccines, forcing patients to travel to Karachi for treatment.

Citizens have voiced their frustration, calling for government intervention, including comprehensive dog culling operations to reduce the stray dog population. Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho has acknowledged the need for action but highlighted that controlling the stray dog issue is the responsibility of municipal authorities.

As the number of dog bite incidents continues to rise, it is critical for authorities to prioritize public health and implement sustainable solutions to prevent further injuries and deaths.
