Carrots have long been celebrated for their benefits to eye health, but they’re not everyone’s favorite snack. For those seeking a delicious alternative, pistachios might hold the answer.
Researchers at Tufts University in Massachusetts have discovered that consuming just two ounces (57 grams) of pistachios daily can greatly enhance eye health. These nuts are packed with lutein, a powerful antioxidant known to boost macular pigment optical density (MPOD). This density is essential for filtering harmful blue light from screens, protecting the retina, and slowing the progression of macular degeneration, as reported by the Daily Express.
Macular disease, the leading cause of vision loss in the UK, affects nearly 1.5 million people, according to the Macular Society. Dr. Tammy Scott, the neuropsychologist behind the study, emphasized the significance of pistachios, stating, “Our findings show that pistachios are more than just a tasty treat — they can significantly support eye health, particularly in aging individuals.”
During the study, participants with low lutein intake consumed two ounces of pistachios daily, doubling their antioxidant levels. Within six weeks, they experienced notable improvements in MPOD, showcasing the effectiveness of pistachios in promoting eye health.
While lutein is found in other foods like broccoli and leafy greens, pistachios offer an advantage. Their natural fats improve the absorption of this antioxidant into the bloodstream, making them a nutrient-dense option rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
This research, partially funded by American Pistachio Growers and the National Institutes of Health, was published in The Journal of Nutrition.
