KP Government Plans Further Outsourcing of Public Hospitals

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to expand the outsourcing of public-sector hospitals, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery across the province. In a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, the Health Department was instructed to present proposals for outsourcing additional hospitals under the public-private partnership (PPP) model by next month.

The meeting included key officials such as the Chief Minister’s Advisor on Health, Ehtesham Ali, Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development, Ikramullah Khan, Secretary Health, Syed Adeel Shah, and senior members from the Health Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Foundation, and Sehat Card Plus program.

During the discussion, several important topics were covered, including expanding the Sehat Card scheme to more hospitals, outsourcing healthcare facilities in remote areas, and implementing reforms within the health sector. The meeting also addressed the financial dues owed to already outsourced hospitals, with the Chief Minister instructing the Finance Department to clear these payments promptly to restore healthcare services in those districts.

The participants agreed to simplify the current process of hospital outsourcing by proposing amendments to the legal framework. A steering committee, led by the Chief Minister, will be established to streamline the outsourcing procedures.

Additionally, the government partnered with Roche Pharmaceuticals to provide free medication for children suffering from hemophilia. Both the provincial government and Roche will equally share the costs of these treatments.

The expansion of free healthcare under the Sehat Card Scheme was also discussed, with a focus on including more hospitals in the program. Chief Minister Gandapur emphasized that strict quality standards must be maintained when empaneling hospitals, particularly ensuring that there is at least one hospital at the tehsil level available to Sehat Card holders.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare services to residents in remote areas by strengthening local healthcare facilities. The outsourcing of hospitals under the PPP model has shown promising results, and the government aims to build on this success to further improve healthcare services, particularly in underdeveloped regions. These initiatives, combined with efforts to enhance services under the Sehat Card Scheme and teaching hospitals, are expected to bring significant improvements to the province’s healthcare system.
