In a concerning update from Pakistan’s recent anti-polio drive, an estimated 500,000 children missed their polio vaccinations, as confirmed by Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, Pakistan’s National Health Services Coordinator, to a foreign media outlet. The missed vaccinations occurred during the nationwide campaign that ran from October 28 to November 3, targeting over 45 million children.
The primary reasons cited for the high number of missed vaccinations included vaccine refusal by some families and others who were unavailable due to travel. The rise in missed vaccinations is alarming, especially as Pakistan is one of only two countries globally where polio remains endemic.
Pakistan has reported a significant rise in polio cases this year, with a total of 48 cases. The breakdown includes 23 cases from Balochistan, 13 from Sindh, 10 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and one each from Punjab and Islamabad. This upward trend is a reversal from 2023, when only six cases were recorded, marking an increase largely due to unvaccinated Afghan refugees relocating across the country, unknowingly carrying the virus.
The government has launched a comprehensive polio vaccination campaign to combat the spread of the disease, though it faces ongoing challenges such as misinformation, vaccine hesitancy, and security risks. Attacks on vaccination teams and law enforcement officials have complicated these efforts. Tragically, last month, a bomb targeted police officers protecting polio workers, resulting in the deaths of five children and two officers.
Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath expressed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to finding and vaccinating the children who missed doses. “We will chase them, we will track them, and we will vaccinate them,” he assured, underscoring the government’s dedication to eradicate the disease.
Pakistan’s polio eradication program is internationally recognized for its robust surveillance system, despite the challenges. To tackle high-risk areas where polio persists, such as Karachi, Quetta, and regions within KP, authorities have devised a focused, region-specific strategy. Plans are underway to coordinate vaccination efforts with neighboring Afghanistan, aiming to curb the cross-border transmission of the virus.
Despite setbacks, Pakistan’s government remains optimistic that strategic targeting of high-risk areas and collaboration with neighboring countries will eventually lead to the elimination of polio in the country.
