Students from Karachi University have unveiled an innovative drug packaging technology that changes color as the medication nears expiration, helping patients identify soon-to-expire medications and promoting safety. Over 200 pharmacy students across various universities participated in this event, showcasing unique packaging designs and robotic medicine reminders to enhance patient care.
This impressive innovation was featured in a special event organized by the University of Karachi’s Faculty of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Science Club. The event aimed to celebrate advancements in healthcare and recognize the role of pharmacists in public health.
A range of activities was held, including sessions on pharmacy practice awareness, patient safety, and advanced pharmacy techniques. The event, which coincided with World Pharmacists Day, also featured scientific competitions to inspire students and raise awareness about the pharmacy profession’s impact on health.
The “Pharma Canvas” initiative allowed students to present their creativity in designing drug packaging. The color-changing packaging technology aims to reduce health risks by providing patients with a clear visual alert when a medication is close to expiring, encouraging safer usage of medicines.
The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Haris Shoaib, addressed the students, motivating them to lead positive change in healthcare. Poster competitions and seminars with expert guest speakers further provided students with valuable feedback and insights into pharmacy innovations.
Ibrahim Maroofi, head of the Pharmacy Science Club, highlighted that the club has been holding educational sessions and competitions for a decade, enhancing pharmacy students’ practical skills. Mahim Zaidi, Corporate Affairs representative of the club, added that over 500 students participated in the event, with 200 competing in different activities. The event also received support from reputable healthcare brands, including Bayer and Medisure, emphasizing a shared commitment to advancing pharmacy education.
