A new Covid variant, XEC, is emerging as a potential dominant strain, according to scientists. First identified in Germany in June, XEC cases have since been reported in the UK, US, Denmark, and several other countries, as noted by users on X (formerly Twitter). This variant carries new mutations that could aid its spread this autumn, although current vaccines are expected to provide protection against severe illness.
The NHS continues to offer free booster shots to those at higher risk of severe Covid. These updated vaccines, though not specifically targeting XEC, are designed to address recent Omicron subvariants. Prof. Francois Balloux, Director of the Genetics Institute at University College London, indicated that while XEC may have a slight transmission advantage, the vaccines should still offer robust protection. It is possible that XEC could become the dominant variant over the winter.
Symptoms of XEC Covid Variant: The symptoms associated with XEC are similar to those of previous Covid variants:
- High temperature
- Aches
- Tiredness
- Cough or sore throat
Most individuals recover within a few weeks, though recovery times can vary. There has been significant growth of XEC in Denmark and Germany, according to Covid data analyst Mike Honey. However, with reduced routine testing, it’s challenging to gauge the current prevalence of Covid.
Where to Get Covid Tests and Vaccines: The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) notes that virus mutations are normal. Those eligible for a free booster vaccine include:
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Residents of care homes for older adults
- Individuals over six months old in clinical risk groups
- Certain front-line NHS, care home, and social care workers
The main vaccination campaign for flu and Covid will begin in October, with some individuals receiving their shots earlier. Dr. Gayatri Amirthalingam, UKHSA Deputy Director, emphasized that vaccination remains the best defense against severe Covid-19. The UKHSA continues to monitor and report on emerging variants.
Covid vaccines are available from numerous High Street chemists and private clinics, costing between £45 and £99. Eligibility requires being 12 or older and not having received a Covid shot in the past three months. Routine Covid testing is no longer recommended, but home tests can be purchased online or at pharmacies for around £2.
