The FDA has expanded its apple juice recall due to concerns about arsenic levels. Refresco Beverages, Inc. recalled an additional 133,500 cases of its 100% apple juice after discovering arsenic levels slightly above the FDA’s limit of 10 parts per billion (ppb). The affected products were sold at major retailers like Walgreens, Aldi, Walmart, and Dollar General.
This recall builds on the FDA’s August warning, where nearly 10,000 cases of Great Value apple juice sold at Walmart were flagged for high arsenic levels. Now, several brands are impacted, including Market Basket, Wellsley Farms, Nice!, and Weis. The FDA has published a complete list of affected product codes and best-by dates for consumers to check.
How Arsenic Contaminates Apple Juice
Arsenic is naturally present in the environment, but it’s the inorganic form that is toxic and dangerous to human health. In this case, the contamination could have occurred through the use of pesticides, or due to exposure to contaminated soil or water during production.
Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic can increase the risk of serious health issues, including cancers of the skin, lungs, and bladder. It can also lead to metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes. Children and pregnant women are especially at risk. If you’ve consumed the recalled apple juice, watch for symptoms like coughing, nausea, vomiting, and numbness. Seek medical attention if needed.
Although no illnesses have been reported so far, the recalled apple juice was distributed across several states, including New York, Alabama, and Virginia, as well as Puerto Rico. Consumers are advised to avoid these products and refer to the FDA’s website for detailed product information.
