The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has announced an urgent recall of five liquid drug products found to contain harmful contaminants. These products, including Cestonil Plus Syrup, Texcol DM 10mg/5ml Syrup, Speczine 5mg/5ml Syrup, Aphylin Syrup, and Zolint Suspension, have been identified as containing ethylene glycol and di-ethylene glycol, both of which are toxic and pose significant health risks when consumed.
The contamination was detected by the Directorate of Drugs Control (DDC) Punjab and confirmed by Drug Testing Laboratories (DTLs), which declared the products as substandard.
Consumers and healthcare providers are urged to avoid the following products:
- Cestonil Plus Syrup: Batch 061357, containing thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, and nicotinamide, manufactured by Razzee Therapeutics, Lahore.
- Texcol DM 10mg/5ml Syrup: Batch 09980, containing dextromethorphan, manufactured by Razzee Therapeutics, Lahore.
- Speczine 5mg/5ml Syrup: Batch 280 287, containing promethazine, manufactured by Spectrum Laboratories, Lahore.
- Aphylin Syrup: Batch 24B056, containing aminophylline, diphenhydramine, and ammonium chloride, manufactured by Obsons Pharmaceuticals, Lahore.
- Zolint Suspension: Batch 24003, containing furazolidone and metronidazole, manufactured by Libra (Private) Ltd, Peshawar.
Ethylene glycol and di-ethylene glycol are known to cause serious health issues, including kidney failure, neurological damage, and even death if ingested. The government has initiated a broader crackdown on substandard drugs to protect public health and prevent the distribution of counterfeit and contaminated pharmaceuticals.
